Announcement Details
Overview:
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati Campus, is inviting applications for one Assistant Professor position in Sociology. This role is on a contract basis, initially until March 31, 2027, with potential for extension based on performance and institutional needs. TISS is a Deemed University and a Grade I institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, known for its inter-disciplinary programs in Social Sciences across its four campuses.

Post: Assistant Professor in Sociology
Pay Scale: Entry pay of Rs. 57700/- in the Academic Pay level 10 as per 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC).
Eligibility Criteria:
Educational Qualification (Candidates must meet either A or B):
A. Essential Qualifications:
i. A Master's degree with a minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale) in Sociology from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
ii. In addition to the above, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or CSIR, or a similar UGC-accredited test like SLET/SET.
OR
Candidates who have been awarded a Ph.D. degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 and their amendments, are exempted from NET/SLET/SET.
Special Exemption for Ph.D. candidates registered before July 11, 2009:
Such candidates are governed by the then-existing Ordinances/Bye-laws/Regulations and are exempted from NET/SLET/SET for 'Assistant Professor' positions if they fulfill the following conditions (certified by the Registrar or Dean Academic Affairs):
The Ph.D. degree was awarded in a regular mode.
The Ph.D. thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners.
An open Ph.D. viva voce of the candidate has been conducted.
The candidate has published two research papers from their Ph.D. work, with at least one in a refereed journal.
The candidate has presented at least two papers based on their Ph.D. work in conferences/seminars sponsored/funded/supported by UGC/ICSSR/CSIR or similar agencies.
Note: NET/SLET/SET is not required for Master's programmes in disciplines where these tests are not conducted by UGC, CSIR, or similar accredited tests.
B. Ph.D. from a Top-Ranked Foreign University:
The Ph.D. degree must have been obtained from a foreign university/institution ranked among the top 500 in the World University Ranking (at any time) by any one of the following:
i. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
ii. The Times Higher Education (THE)
iii. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai).
Desirable Qualifications:
Ability to teach papers such as Introduction to Sociology, Indian Society, Society and Polity, Urban Sociology, and Research Methodology.
Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in the relevant field and two or more years of teaching experience.
Experience of research on Northeast India and its transnational neighborhood.
Ability to teach inter-disciplinary courses across schools/centers at the Institute.
Good research and publication track record in peer-reviewed, national, and international journals.
Ability to supervise Bachelor's and Master's students.
Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relate to and engage with faculty and students.
Ability to work on projects and with interdisciplinary teams.
Selection Process:
Applications will be shortlisted based on qualifications and experience.
Merely possessing the prescribed qualifications does not guarantee an interview call.
Eligible candidates will be informed via email to appear for a presentation and an offline interview.
The interview will be conducted at the TISS Guwahati Campus in the third week of September 2026.
Candidates currently employed must bring a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) from their employer for the presentation/interview.
No TA/DA will be paid for appearing for the interview.
Shortlisted candidates must send scanned copies of their colored passport-size photographs and self-attested photocopies of relevant certificates for essential qualifications and experience. Original certificates will be verified only for the selected candidate at the time of appointment.
The Institute reserves the right to relax qualifications or age criteria, invite unapplied persons for interviews, or not fill the advertised vacancy.
